A couple from Chicago with grown children will build their retirement home on the south facing slope of a mountain in Asheville, North Carolina. David Gauld has designed a modern house for the 5-acre site, using traditional post-and-beam construction and rich, natural materials.
The 5500-square foot house is designed with the intention to be both Energy Star and LEED certified, and it incorporates rain water reclamation, solar panels, a wind turbine, geo-thermal heating, and FSC-certified, locally-sourced, recycled and reclaimed materials.
The design is organized by two main bars, one for living spaces and one for bedrooms, which intersect and are angled in a way that follow the contours of the site. A third bar contains a pool and patio.
