Redesigning an art museum in the most important historic building of Miami Beach’s Art Deco District, with its 1999 addition by the iconic architect Arata Isozaki, presented many challenges. David Gauld, who worked on the previous expansion 20 year ago as an employee of Isozaki, was asked to design the new renovation and expansion. Isozaki agreed to collaborate as Gauld’s design consultant.

The project adds 47% more programmable space without increasing the overall footprint, maximizing the use of current facilities and adding 7400 square feet of new space. The new total area of 41,000 square feet includes new galleries, an education department with its own entrance, and an enclosed courtyard for special events.
