John Bartlett Store
New York City

The 500-square-foot flagship John Bartlett retail store in Greenwich Village is the first for this gifted and charismatic menswear designer.

The irregularly shaped space is given focus by a ceiling medallion and an over-scaled light fixture illuminating a round display table. Space limitations suggested that perimeter ceiling space be captured for storage, using glass and steel laboratory cabinets above the hanging racks and built-in cabinets above the toilet and dressing rooms.

A brick wall with exposed pipes was clad in dry-stacked limestone designed to enclose the pipes while creating niches to display merchandise.

The building's landmark designation limited exterior changes. Yet the storefront was rebuilt in a way that honors its historic style while also identifying its new use. In all, the new Bartlett shop suggests that a retail landmark has quietly been added to the storied Village scene. See the store in the book Green Retail Design, published 2010.
